Fighting Unreason With Reason
Welcome back to Fighting Unreason with Reason. This issue, I describe how we can leverage capitalism to solve the climate crisis and highlight some great conversations I’ve had recently about how to bridge the American Schism.
Let’s dive in!
FINDING REASON IN UNREASONABLE TIMES: How the Capitalism Model Holds the Secret to Stopping Climate Change
There’s been no lack of criticism about capitalism over the course of history—that it’s exploitative, alienating, and erodes human rights. Anti-capitalist ideas, movements, and trends have been a mainstay on the world stage since the mid-19th century. Marxist schools of thought exploded in the early 20th century, and ever since, various forms of anti-capitalist ideology have constituted a major theme of the zeitgeist, often flying in the face of the globalist capitalist model that has simultaneously dominated the world economy.
But for all the anticapitalist rhetoric out there, I believe that the global capitalist model is NOT the problem. On the contrary, I would argue that only by leveraging the capitalist structure can we slow the long-felt effects of things like climate change.

THE ROAD TO REASON
I’m not famous, but Joseph Jaffe definitely made me feel like it on a recent episode of his show, Joseph Jaffe Is Not Famous. His humor injects some levity into the seriousness of our nation’s cultural divide, and I think our conversation shows how much can be accomplished by talking things out in a rational and logical way. Joseph and I had a wonderful conversation about the importance of using data to make big decisions, as well as why our nation is fascinated with pimple popping. You can watch the full interview HERE.
Populism is often considered a dirty word, but as I shared with Rob Mellon on the History Ago Go podcast, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Check out the full interview HERE.
NOTES FROM THE EXHAUSTED MAJORITY
Former Attorney General William Barr, whose allegiance to President Donald Trump made him a villain in the eyes of many Americans, has a new tell-all book that openly criticizes Trump’s time in office. “Trump only cared about one thing: himself,” Barr writes. “Country and principle took second place.”
The book is interesting only in the fact that Barr is not the first Trump lackey to reverse course after four years of championing his ideals. And as a column in The Washington Post recently pointed out, with much of Trump’s rhetoric currently focused on praising Russian President Vladimir Putin for his handling of the Ukraine invasion, Republicans will be faced with some hard choices in the near future. Will they side with the man who’s had a stranglehold on the Republican party for nearly six years, or go their own way?
