Fighting Unreason With Reason
Welcome back to Fighting Unreason with Reason. This issue, I discuss that in order to revitalize our democracy, we need to stop thinking in terms of “winners and losers” —despite what Mitch McConnell says. I also share some great conversations I’ve had about bridging our American Schism, and I have some HUGE news about a new campaign I’ve launched to take back our democracy. Let’s dive in!
FINDING REASON IN UNREASONABLE TIMES
My article this month centers around something Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell said back in 2017 which in my view captures just how broken the political arena is in the United States today: “winners make policy, losers go home.” Not only is this type of statement coming from one of our nation’s top political leaders astounding and disturbing, it’s antithetical to the very concept of democracy. Everyone—not just the winners—belongs in the conversation.
THE ROAD TO REASON
Douglas Coleman has by far been one of my favorite people to chat with over the last few months. I’ve visited his show several times since the release of American Schism, and recently got the chance to catch up with him again. During the interview, we extensively discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and what it means for the rest of the world.

NOTES FROM THE EXHAUSTED MAJORITY
🌟𝐁𝐈𝐆 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒🌟
For those of you familiar with American Schism, you know that one of the key points discussed is that the 21st century looks to be increasingly characterized by a battle between two conflicting governing models: democracy and autocracy. I think the conflict in Ukraine exemplifies that fight.
All the more reason to take action: I’m excited to announce a new campaign designed to help save our democracy. It’s called the FU CAMPAIGN.
FU probably doesn’t stand for what you think it might. It stands for FIGHT UNREASON WITH REASON
The political debate in our county has collapsed. We’ve moved to a place where anger and rancor have crowded out reason, logic, and rational debate. Compromise and bipartisanship have become dirty words, and it’s all amplified by a revenue-chasing media industry more interested in clicks and views than in the pursuit of facts and objective truth.
But recent data shows that political extremists on both sides aren’t reflective of the majority—they’re just shouting the loudest. Almost 70% of US citizens are part of a “frustrated majority”—a group that feels there needs to be a more productive way to solve the public policy problems we face.
In order to move forward as a nation, we must recognize that our collective triumph as a nation—not fighting—holds the keys to progress.
That’s where the FU Campaign comes in.
I’m asking citizens to become FU ADVOCATES by taking the FU Pledge at my website, fuwr.org. By taking the pledge, you’re eligible to win a $1,000 scholarship AND a $1,000 donation to a Ukrainian aid organization.
I’m also recruiting college students across the country to become FU CHAMPIONS, spreading the word about Fighting Unreason With Reason. Each FU Champion will have the opportunity to win a personal mentorship with me.
